You will initiate innovative programs, instill an HR philosophy, enjoy work autonomy, and transfer your consultative and collaborative skills to a partnership firm recognized as a global leader.

Our HR department is highly respected and valued throughout the organization. We know the contributing role HR plays in our reputation for extraordinary client service and legal representation of the world's financial and commercial leaders. We are a top-tier, resources-driven organization and you'll have strategic assets and management support to implement your creative vision.

You will guide senior management in HR activities, and coach and counsel our administrative and legal support staff of 150+ people. Your strong leadership skills will be recognized, respected and generously compensated as you launch and implement engaging programs that address succession, talent development, productivity, wage and salary administration, and employee recognition.

Our Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in personnel management
  • Proven track record and 7-10+ years experience in HR Management
  • Thorough knowledge of California employment law
You will interact with employees at every level of the firm, from the Executive Management team to the mail room, and all areas in-between. Exuding the right balance of "professionalism and common touch," is critical. We're looking for a delicate and diplomatic mix of intelligence, discretion, ambition, and integrity, along with someone equally adept at dealing with the inherent personal sensitivities of the employee-employer relationship and the demanding requirements of a competitive, high-performing professional services firm.

Your Opportunity

As an experienced HR professional, your career should be defined by a progressive record of achievement. Most likely, you began as a HR generalist and developed expertise in various specialty areas such as recruiting or compensation. With this position you can expect to continue your upward trajectory through:
  • Professional Development -- Our attorneys and staff are known for being the best in their field--it's a commitment to excellence that permeates our entire firm. We greatly support professional development and would expect that you are active in leading organizations such as PIHRA and SHRM. You will collaborate with HR representatives throughout the firm. The high visibility of the LA Office affords you the opportunity to showcase programs that could be adopted throughout the firm.
  • Generous Compensation and Benefits -- We have a competitive benefits and compensation program; from 401K and pension plans to tuition reimbursement, and paid parking in downtown Los Angeles; our employment package is commensurate with our firm's stature.

More About Your Role

It's a busy job -- HR collaborates closely with department managers in 17 areas, IT, Paralegal Services, Secretarial Services and Office Services, to name a few. Excellent time management skills will help keep your department running smoothly and efficiently. You report directly to the Office Administrator, who is a strong supporter of the HR department and a close collaborative partner.

Many of the daily issues involving employee relations and transactional matters are routinely handled by our full-time HR Coordinator and Recruiter, both of whom report directly to you. Two part-time HR consultants assist in various projects and departmental training.

Working with such a diverse group of employees requires exemplary presentation and focused communication skills - you should be comfortable speaking before groups of varying sizes and situations. At times, your role will shift between employee advocate and firm management representative, and you will succeed if you are perceived as both a fair sounding board and effective enforcer of company policy.

To perform these functions well, your "keys to success" include such qualities as:
  • Professionalism of the highest order -- We are a traditional and conservative firm, with an entrepreneurial spirit, which reflects the clients we serve in the sophisticated world of banking, finance and commerce. You'll be a role model of business-appropriate behavior and have the ability to inspire others.
  • Active Listener -- It is important for employees to feel that their concerns are heard, as well as acted upon. Follow-through is critical. You'll know you are on the right track when people find you accessible and eagerly seek your opinion.
  • Financial Acumen -- As part of our expanding vision for our HR department, we would like our new HR manager to apply their strong financial analytical skills and be able to make a business case for the programs they want to implement. You will persuasively demonstrate how your ideas can positively affect the firm's bottom line.
  • Risk Manager -- Eliminating, reducing and minimizing employers' liability exposure should be a demonstrable part of your record achievement.
Among the typical HR responsibilities of your job are:
  • Overseeing office recruitment activities for all management and support staff classification, student internships and temporary personnel.
  • Provide leadership and continued professional development for administrative and support staff personnel.
  • Direct office wage and salary administration and employee performance appraisal programs.
  • Develop and evaluate training programs for support staff.
  • Update and review handbook and policies as needed.
  • Report employment law regulatory compliance as required.
  • Implement and maintain office philanthropic activities.
If this position seems like the right mix of challenge and opportunity, we welcome hearing from you.
